The AGI Society

AGI is an emerging field aiming at the building of “thinking machines”; that is, general-purpose systems with intelligence comparable to that of the human mind (and perhaps ultimately well beyond human general intelligence).

The AGI Society is committed to the pursuit of machine intelligence, gathering an international group of leading academic and industry researchers involved in scientific and engineering work aimed directly toward the goal of artificial general intelligence.

The Artificial General Intelligence Society is a nonprofit organization with the following goals:

01

Promote the study of artificial general intelligence (AGI), and the design of AGI systems.

02

Facilitate co-operation and communication among those interested in the study and pursuit of AGI

03

Hold conferences and produce publications regarding AGI research and development

04

Publicize and disseminate by other means knowledge and views concerning AGI

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

The original goal of Artificial Intelligence (AI) was to build ‘thinking machines’, but mainstream AI research has turned toward domain-dependent and problem-specific solutions; therefore it has become necessary to use a new name to indicate research that still pursues the “Grand AI Dream”. Similar labels for this kind of research include “Strong AI”, “Human-level AI”, etc.

In recent years, more and more researchers have recognized the necessity – and feasibility – of returning to the original goals of the field by treating intelligence as a whole. Increasingly, there is a call for a transition back to confronting the more difficult issues of “human-level intelligence” and more broadly Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

AGI research differs from ordinary AI research by stressing the versatility and wholeness of intelligence, and by carrying out the engineering practice according to an outline of a system comparable to the human mind in a certain sense.

AGI vs Narrow AI Approaches

The creation of software programs displaying broad, deep, human-style general intelligence is a grand and ambitious goal. And yet it is far from a frivolous one: AGI will soon yield dramatic changes in every area of human life and society. Advanced AGIs that vastly exceed human intelligence will bring on a Technological Singularity, quite likely within our lifetimes.

The problems involved in creating general-purpose intelligent systems are very different from those involved in creating special-purpose systems. Therefore, this society is different from conventional AI research societies in its stress on the long-term potential of research towards the ultimate goal of AGI, rather than immediate applications. Research and contributions focused on details of AGI systems are welcome, if they clearly indicate the relation between the special topics considered and intelligence as a whole, by addressing the generality, extensibility, and scalability of the techniques proposed or discussed.

Since AGI research is still in a relatively nascent state, the society strongly encourages novel approaches coming from various theoretical and technical traditions, including (but not limited to) symbolic, connectionist, statistical, evolutionary, robotic and information-theoretic, as well as integrative and hybrid approaches.

AGI Conference Series

The AGI conference series has played, and continues to play, a significant role in this resurgence of research on artificial intelligence in the deeper, original sense of the term “artificial intelligence.”

The conferences encourage interdisciplinary research based on different understandings of intelligence, and exploring different approaches.   As the  AI field becomes increasingly commercialized and well accepted, maintaining and emphasizing a coherent focus on the AGI goals at the heart of the field remains more critical than ever.

AGI-22
The 15th Annual AGI Conference

LIVE & VIRTUAL FROM SEATTLE, WA, USA

FROM 19-22 AUGUST 2022

We invite you to join us in bringing to the world the most important event in the history of AI.   My colleagues at the AGI Society and I have been organizing annual AGI  conferences and workshops since 2006, but this year is different.   We are now seeing billions of dollars of  investment flowing into AGI R&D, and interest from national leaders and the  UN as well as corporations in every sector.   The 2022 AGI Conference will be the first AGI R&D  conference of this new era in which AGI is a widely-accepted practical pursuit making immediate impact on the world.   We will be thrilled to have your collaboration in building this new reality.”

Dr. BEN GOERTZEL
